Like its name implies, Photoshop is often used for retouching images in your camera’s built-in software. Just remember that you’ll need to use the camera’s option to save the photo in RAW format so you’ll be able to manipulate images later on. Retouching images is covered in Chapter 5.

In this book, Photoshop is used as the tool to create and modify image work. I use Photoshop to help me create a range of images, many of which incorporate the bells and whistles discussed in this book. I guide you through the fundamentals of designing and editing a digital painting in Photoshop.

Photoshop includes a feature that allows you to simulate a canvas. If you forget that you’re working with a non-destructible file, and try to add too much or remove too much, the colors will get lost. So don’t fret if your image seems to be disappearing before your eyes. Just remember that you can always go back to a previous version and start over.

This book includes the most essential skills you need to become a master of Photoshop, but if you want to learn more from a Photoshop pro about the specific tools used in this book, be sure to check out Photoshop Elements _for Creative Pros by_ Wendy Goodman (Wiley), a comprehensive book that focuses on individual tools and techniques.

Introducing Photoshop

If you’re familiar with another photo editing program, such as Adobe PhotoShop Elements, or If you’re a graphic designer already familiar with Photoshop, then you’re ready to get started with Photoshop CS. You can also use Photoshop to work in the following sections:

The heart of any digital image editing project is the layers.

You can manipulate color, light, or shadow, or create a mix of all three.

You can use layer masks to blend images or add backgrounds and shadows.

You can even paint in the image.

Before you start to play around in Photoshop, go through this chapter to help you get comfortable with the basic tools available in this program.

Figuring Out the Basics of the Tools

As mentioned earlier, Photoshop CS allows you to create and manipulate images by manipulating layers. You can manipulate color, light, or shadow in layers by using built-in tools or via the Magic Wand tool, the Levels tool, the Pen tool, the Brush tool, and the Magic Eraser.

You can use several tools to create a range of effects in the same image. For example, I
