Finding free online tutorials

Photoshop is just one example of a tool for which there are online tutorials. You can also find how-to instructions on how to use programs like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Corel Paint Shop Pro, Adobe InDesign, Dreamweaver, and others.

Checking out the Canvas

The first place to learn to use Photoshop is by playing with the program’s layout, which is called the canvas. A canvas is the active area where you create and edit an image (see Figure 2-2). Working inside a canvas, you can see the controls and tools for creating and working with your image. You can create a new document as well as use a canvas to edit an existing document.

In the following sections, I show you the interface of the canvas, the tools that you need to use, and where to find these tools.

Understanding the Canvas

Each piece of canvas space in Photoshop is called a canvas. The entire canvas is the canvas space for creating and editing an image. It’s also the place where you create or change layer properties and see your image. Figure 2-3 shows what the workspace looks like when you have an image open. It looks similar to the screen shown in Figure 2-2.

You have different working areas within the canvas; each has a slight look and feel to it (see Figure 2-4). All of the tools that you need to use for creating and editing are located in the Canvas. In this book, you work almost exclusively in the Canvas.

You can use the most needed tools in Photoshop in the same way as you would in the Elements version. The biggest difference between the two versions is that you can access more options in Photoshop Elements but they are limited to a lesser number of selections in the professional version.

Penile injuries are usually referred to genitourinary surgery rather than urology, but there are multiple urological injuries associated with penile trauma \[[@rjy249C1], [@rjy249C2]\]. Because of the rarity of injuries to the penis, we do not know exactly the damage of pelvic injury to the penis. Here, we report a case of urethral lesion by urethral traumas associated with pelvic fractures. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a urethral injury of the penis by pelvic trauma.

CASE REPORT {#rjy249s2}
===========

A 51-year-old man was admitted to our emergency room by ambulance due to syncope and progressive hematuria in a state of shock. A fall resulted in multiple injuries, including severe pelvic trauma with multiple fractures (Fig. [1](#rjy249F1){ref-type=”fig”}). On admission, urethral bleeding was observed when the patient urinated, and hematuria occurred continuously. The patient had no history of sexual intercourse. Complete blood cell count showed platelets of 97 × 10^3^/μL and hemoglobin of 7.5 g/dL. There were no abnormalities in other blood studies.

We consulted the urologist in our hospital, but the penis was swollen, and there was no lesion observed on inspection. Therefore, we performed suprapubic cystostomy to prevent penile strangulation during the surgery.

After urethral bleeding was recognized, surgery was performed. After complete dissection of pelvic muscles, we found urethral bleeding. We sutured the urethra up to the bladder, just above the level of the bifurcation. In addition, we confirmed urethral injury by looking at the bladder from the retroperitoneum. No active bleeding was seen, but bleeding was observed from the posterior urethra of the penile shaft (Fig. [2](#rjy249F2){ref-type=”fig”}).
