Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.
The program was created to replace the earlier Obsolete Microsystems (OMS) release of CAD and drafting software, and was originally based on the same technology. Many legacy functions, such as those used in drafting, were also inherited from OMS. AutoCAD has been available for the Apple II, Apple Macintosh, DOS, Microsoft Windows and Linux.
During its development, AutoCAD was first licensed to [A][A][A] MicroSystems (MSI), who developed a subset of AutoCAD called “Academic AutoCAD”. Later, AutoDesk bought all the rights from MSI and released it as AutoCAD in 1987. From 1987 to 1991, AcDb was AutoCAD’s official name, since the license was written to allow third-party products to refer to AutoCAD as “AcDb”.
While earlier versions of AutoCAD were written in Turbo Pascal, Version 2.0 and later are written in C++.
AutoCAD 2017 was announced on September 1, 2016 and was released on March 10, 2017.
History [ edit ]
AutoCAD started as a product for the emerging desktop computer market. During its development, AutoCAD was initially developed as a product for the mainframe market, using a microprocessor instead of a microprocessor or minicomputer. It was later developed as a microprocessor product before being introduced to the desktop market.
Name [ edit ]
The word “Auto” is a reference to computer-aided design, while the “CAD” is from Computer Aided Design. The original name was AutoMicroSystems. After being bought by Autodesk in 1987, the application’s name was changed to AcDb, which was later changed to Autodesk.
AutoCAD is available in two editions: Home Edition and Professional Edition.
Both editions have different areas and functions and usually carry different prices.
Editions [ edit ]
Features [ edit ]
Each of the editions of AutoCAD has the same basic features, but differ in features based on their price and/or software required to operate them.
Home Edition [ edit ]
Home Edition is available in two versions: Personal for use at home and AcDb for workplaces. These editions include all the tools required for the simplest 2D drafting and more advanced drafting, designing and project documentation.
Personal edition is available only
The most common use of AutoCAD is for drafting but it also has other uses such as CAD/CAM, manufacturing and visualization. As of 2017, Autodesk claims that AutoCAD is the best-selling product in the CAD software category.

In February 2019, the United States Department of Homeland Security’s watchdog the DHS Office of Inspector General published a report that raised concerns that the contractor Autodesk was unaware of bugs in the software that were causing problems for users. The problems caused by the bugs included problems drawing. The office’s report stated that Autodesk “delayed a product review and correction cycle, failed to promptly implement enhancements to resolve the issue, and refused to acknowledge the impact of the security and usability issue”.
In August 2019, Autodesk reported the discovery of a vulnerability in AutoCAD that could allow remote code execution. The problem was fixed and a patch was released.
AutoCAD supports a number of interfaces, including:
The most common interface is the two-dimensional white text on a black background Graphical User Interface (GUI). This interface is a two-dimensional mouse-driven user interface with a simple layout. This is a very similar interface to Microsoft PowerPoint and the interface allows drawing of objects and annotation. The white text on a black background is used to indicate what each item does.
The ribbon interface has been available with AutoCAD since Release 9 for Windows, but is not available with AutoCAD LT. Instead, it is represented by the “3D Ribbon”. This ribbon is part of the new interface that was introduced with Release 16 for Windows. The ribbon shows a number of tabs, with each tab being associated with a particular function

What’s New in the AutoCAD?
Simplified User Interface:
The layout of the ribbon and toolbars is simpler and more consistent with the existing ribbon and ribbon view in prior releases. (video: 2:05 min.)
More granular parameter control:
Control how parameters are stored on the command line (video: 1:45 min.) and how values are stored on the drawing canvas. This feature, available in AutoCAD LT 2019.3, was used to support additional commands and commands such as reduce. (video: 1:45 min.)
More accurate drawing features:
Measure tools now more accurately calculate your measurement. (video: 1:45 min.) In addition, thickness is more accurately measured when it’s used in a shape.
Your drawings now include bump maps, so you can more accurately display and edit complex surfaces. (video: 1:45 min.)
Support for international languages:
AutoCAD 2019.2 included support for the Arabic and Chinese languages. (video: 1:45 min.)
Improved model feature display:
You can now use a new model feature visualization mode to quickly view your models and their annotations. (video: 1:45 min.)
Improved Input Method User Interface:
The Input Method User Interface (IMU) in prior releases has been expanded to support more languages, and simplified to make it easier to use. (video: 1:45 min.)
Ability to use Arabic numerals instead of Roman numerals:
If you are using the Arabic or Chinese languages, you can now enter and display values using Arabic numerals.
Drawing panels that were hidden in prior releases are now available for use, even if they were not in the last release. (video: 1:45 min.)
Additional revisions to the ribbon and ribbon view:
The ribbon, ribbon view, and the functions that have not changed since prior releases are updated. The ribbon tab bar, ribbon dropdowns, and ribbon buttons and tabs are redesigned and now match the new ribbon view. A new feature, the AutoLISP ribbon (AutoCAD LT 2019.3) and a new ribbon view (AutoCAD LT 2019.3) both provide many of the ribbon features available in AutoCAD LT 2019.3. (video: 1:30 min.)
A new grid view is added to the ribbon and ribbon view.
